Op 21 en 22 oktober 2004 organiseerde het Centrum voor Theologie en Militaire Ethiek een Engelstalig expertenseminar rond het thema ‘Just War and Terrorism. The End of the Just War Concept?‘.
Genodigde sprekers waren de Amerikaanse filosoof Nick Fotion, de Duitse oud-generaal Alphart Von Horn, de Nederlandse expert in militaire ethiek Fred Van Iersel, de Leuvense moraaltheoloog Johan Verstraeten en Carl Ceulemans die als repetitor verbonden is aan de leerstoel filosofie van de Koninklijke Militaire School (Brussel).
Gezien de opmerkelijke en belangwekkende bevindingen die tijdens het seminar aan bod waren gekomen omtrent de relatie tussen het rechtvaardige oorlog denken en het terrorisme, werd beslist de gedeeltelijk herwerkte papers te bundelen in een boek. De uitgeverij Peeters (Leuven) schaarde zich enthousiast achter het project en bracht halfweg januari het eerste exemplaar op de boekenmarkt.
Het boek telt 244 blz. en bevat behalve de bijdragen van de genoemde sprekers ook een artikel van oud-aalmoezenier Claude Selis, en aalmoezenier Wim Smit, die verbonden is aan de Koninklijke Militaire School.

De kostprijs bedraagt het zeer schappelijke bedrag van 28 Euro. With the new wave of terrorism, many questions have been raised by scholars, politicians, members of the military, and even ordinary people, all of whom have been startled by this extreme kind of violence. Questions have been raised about terrorism as a phenomenon, but also about the possibility of defeating it. Not surprisingly terrorism has become the top priority of most governments, security agencies, intelligence services and military establishments.
One of the questions that the authors who contribute to this book try to answer is whether just war theory is outdated in this time of terrorism. But they also deal with several other closely related questions such as the acceptability of so-called pre-emptive and preventive strike, and the role of the UN, NATO, US, and Europe in the international fight against terrorism.
With its interesting spectrum of viewpoints on some very actual and challenging themes, this book attempts to challenge the personal opinion of scholars and other interested readers.
